BiogenGreenfinch Wins National Recycling Award

BiogenGreenfinch picked up the prize for Waste to Energy Provider of the Year at this year’s National Recycling Awards, held at the London Hilton, Park Lane on Thursday 14th July. The best recycling and waste management achievements in the UK were recognised at this year’s prestigious awards ceremony with over 600 people present to celebrate and reward the impressive work on display in the industry.

Iona Capital is currently working closely with BiogenGreenfinch to bid for a number of waste industry projects.

BiogenGreenfinch owns and operates three Anaerobic Digestion plants which process a mixture of household and commercial food waste to generate significant quantities of “green” electricity for the national grid – enough to power over 6,000 homes continually for a year. It is estimated that the UK produces a staggering 22 million tonnes of food waste each year. The majority of this waste ends up in landfill where it releases methane to the atmosphere – a gas which is twenty two times more harmful than carbon dioxide. BiogenGreenfinch’s method captures the methane to produce renewable energy and also produces a valuable bio-fertiliser for farmers that is itself a substitute for fossil-fuel derived chemical fertilisers.

The company beat off competition from Veolia Environmental Services, Cemex and Living Fuels to win the award which was presented by comedian, actor and satirist, Marcus Brigstocke.

Richard Barker CEO said:

“This award is a great recognition for the whole BiogenGreenfinch team who have worked so hard to get us where we are today. It is also very useful to help promote Anaerobic Digestion more broadly as the best way to convert the UK’s enormous amount of food waste into renewable energy”

Andrea Lockerbie, acting editor, MRW commented:

“Winning a National Recycling Award is an amazing achievement. Each year the standard and number of entries and gets higher and higher, making it a tough job for the judges to pick out a winner… our finalists should feel equally proud of their success too.”
