Deal Overview

In October 2012, when a consortium of North Wales local authorities; Denbighshire County Council, Conwy County Borough Council and Flintshire County Council signed a 15-year agreement with Biogen UK to design, build, and operate the Waen facility. The investment benefits from government support under the FiT regime and the RHI subsidy, both of which increase annually in line with RPI and run for 20 years from the date of accreditation.

The facility processes food waste collected from households and businesses in Flintshire, Denbighshire and Conwy generating 1MW of renewable electricity each hour. Electricity generated is delivered directly to the national grid and is enough to provide sufficient power for 1,500 homes.

The plant produces PAS110 accredited digestate as a by-product that is spread on local farm land.

This facility was designed and built by Biogen UK who are also the operator.
