Deal Overview
Biogen Gwyriad is Iona Capital’s first AD project and was developed in partnership with the Welsh Government.
The plant processes waste collected from householders by Gwynedd Council and from local businesses. The facility generates in excess of 4,000 MWh of electricity annually, which is exported to the national grid.
The project benefits from government support under the Feed in Tariff (“FiT”) regime, a 20-year government subsidy that increases annually in line with the Retail Prices Index (RPI). The facility also produces a bio-fertiliser (“digestate”) as a by-product, which is spread on local farm land. The facility was one of the first AD plants in the country to achieve PAS110 accreditation for its digestate. PAS110 is a nationally accepted quality standard for digestate.
This facility was designed and built by Biogen UK Ltd (“Biogen”). Biogen has not only been providing turnkey solutions for AD since 1996 but is also an experienced operator, currently managing 13 AD facilities in the UK, including this facility.
